Inspiration + Design

Lately, I have been craving a quick and mindless kind of crochet project. Something that is perfect to make while I sit at the pool watching my daughter swim. So of course my mind immediately went into creative mode. What could I make that would be quick, easy and useful?

It has been on mind for a while now to create a set of coasters for the house, but it just kept getting put on the back burner because….. well, I wanted to make all the Crochet Tops instead!

So now is the perfect time to finally bring these Crochet Cactus Coasters to life!

The Yarn

For this project I needed a really sturdy and durable type of yarn. So I chose to use Lion Brand Re-Up cotton blend yarn. It is 85% Cotton and 15% Polyester, which not only makes a very durable yarn but also makes it machine washable. I knew that these coasters would be getting a lot of use, so machine washable is definitely a bonus. Re-Up comes in about 20 different colors and Is very affordable! One skien costs only $1.99!

To create these Cactus coasters, I used Ecru and Lime!

Pattern Notes

-This pattern is worked in rows from the bottom up.

-Every stitch in the pattern is a Sc. The instructions will tell you what color (color A or color B) and the number in the parenthesis tells you how many Sc to make in that color.

-Color A is carried along behind Color B when not in use.

-In this example, Color A is Ecru, and color B is Lime

-This Pattern is also easy to work following the graph that goes along with it.

Helpful tips: When reading a crochet graph pattern, all odd numbered rows are always read from right to left, and all even numbered rows are read from left to right.

Right before changing colors, it is helpful to check to make sure that the non dominant color yarn is not peeking through the front of your work or bunching up. If it is, simply give the non dominant yarn a gentle tug to even out the stitches.

Adding Blossoms

To add the “blossoms” you are basically going to be using yarn to make 3 small lines on the top of each of the cactus arms.

Locate the top middle of your cactus where you want your blossom to be. Using your yarn and yarn needle, poke the needle from the back of your coaster and pull yarn to the front side. This will be the “original spot”.  Then find a spot directly above the “original spot” and insert needle from the front and pull yarn to the back. You have made your first line.

Now, coming from behind, go back into the “original spot”. This time you will be making a diagonal line to the right with your yarn. You now have 2 lines.

Bring yarn through the “original spot” again. Then create the diagonal line to the left. You now have a blossom. Repeat this for the other 2 arms of the cactus.

Adding Fringe

Cut 32 pieces if yarn approximately 4” long. Fold the yarn in half and pull it through top row of your coaster. Then pull the yarn ends through the loop and pull tight. Repeat across the top row and the bottom row of your work. Then you can separate the yarn pieces for a more “frayed” look.
