Inspiration + Design

Have you ever seen the movie “Just Go With It”? If you haven’t, I highly recommend you go and watch it ASAP, and if you have, then this crochet dress might look a tad bit familiar to you. There is a particular scene in the movie where Jennifer Aniston is going to a Lu’au, and she is wearing an adorable crochet dress, or at least it looks crocheted. Well, ever since I saw that movie, I have not been able to get that crochet dress out of my mind. I looked and looked for one that was similar for years without any luck. That’s when I decided that I should just try my hand at designing my own version of it.

A Crochet Dress for Everyone

Probably one of my favorite things about this Crochet Dress is that it’s completely customizable and comes in 3 different variations, a crop length top, a hip length top, and a full dress version. The top portion is worked in 2 separate panels from side to side, creating armholes as you go, and then seamed together in the middle. Afterwards you will attach yarn and begin working in the round to create the bodice and the dress portion.

To help you find the best size for you, I have included a complete size chart for every section of this pattern. First choose your bust size, and look at the measurements for each portion of that size, if they match yours, then that is the size you will make. However if you want a a more customized fit, simply check out all the measurements and follow the specific size that matches the measurement. For example, you can make a size Small top portion, a size XS armhole section and a size Medium Bodice etc.

The Yarn

For this Crochet Dress, I chose my absolute favorite yarn, Lion Brand Coboo, a category 3 Light weight yarn. If you’re familiar with any of my designs, you know that Coboo is my go-to light weight yarn. It is a blend of cotton and bamboo, which creates an incredibly soft, breathable fabric that is perfect for all the warm weather makes.

Gauge

Before blocking: 15 Sc and 21 Sc rows = 4” OR 13 Dc and 8 Dc rows =4”

It should be noted that Gauge is VERY important for this crochet dress pattern. To ensure proper fit, you need to make sure that your stitches are meeting the gauge for BOTH the width AND height, as the top portion is worked side to side and will not fit properly if height gauge is off.

For Reference- the Sc “sections” (4 Sc rows) should measure .75” in height and the Dc “sections” (3 Dc rows) should measure 1.5” in height. If you are having trouble meeting the height gauge for the Dc rows, it is helpful to watch this video about “The Golden Loop”

***Note- Coboo yarn and some similar yarns will slightly stretch during wear and after washing/blocking.***

Pattern Notes

-Top portion of the pattern is worked in 2 pieces and then seamed together. The Dress section is worked in continuous rounds.

-Pattern is written for the “dress” version. If you would like a top/ crop top, stop where indicated or when you get to your desired length.

-Ch 1 and Ch 2 do NOT count as a stitch throughout.

-Total Stitches are indicated between [ ]

-The sizing guide follows size XS(S, M, L, XL, 2X, 3X). E.g. “Fsc 49(51, 53, 55, 57, 59, 61)” means Fsc 49 for XS, Fsc 51 for Small, Fsc 53 for Medium, Fsc 55 for Large, Fsc 57 for XL, Fsc 59 for 2X, Fsc 61 for 3X. If there is only one number, it applies to ALL sizes.

-For a more customized fit, you can mix and match different sizes for each section of the pattern. For example, you can make a size Medium Top portion, a size Small Arm hole, and a size Large Bodice, that way each section will fitted to your specific needs.

Customization Tip- If you would like your top to have a little more bust coverage, simply start increasing on your Sc rows approximately 10 rows before moving on to the arm holes. For example, if you are making a size small you will start your increase rows on row 15 by placing 2 Sc in the last St of row 15. Then row 16 will start with 2 Sc in the first St. Repeat increase rows by increasing in the last St of all ODD Sc rows and in the first St of all EVEN Sc rows. Then continue on to the arm hole section as described.

Arm Holes

All sizes

Sizes Written XS(S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL)

Row 20(26, 27, 34, 40, 41, 47): Ch 1, Turn. Sc in the first St and each St across.

You will now be making arm holes by starting a Fsc row immediately after completing the last St of the last row and then joining to the other side of the work.

At the end of the row Ch 2, then begin to Fsc into the 1st Ch. Fsc 49(51, 53, 55, 57, 59, 61) and join to row 1. You will now be working in the opposite side of your beginning Ch row. Sc in each of the 25(25, 25, 25, 25, 25, 25) St across. You will have 99(101, 103, 105, 107, 109, 111) Sc at the end of this row including the Fsc.

***Now is a good time to check to make sure that your arm fits comfortably through the arm hole you just made. If it is too tight, you can adjust the number of Fsc you created, making sure to Fsc an odd number. Keep in mind if you adjust the arm holes, the stitch counts going forward will be different than what is written.***

Construction

Lay both panels next to each other to form your top. Measure approximately 3” from the bottom on the back side of both panels and place a stitch marker. Measure approximately 2” from the bottom on the front side of both panels and place a stitch marker. This is your neck hole. If you would like your neck opening to be bigger or smaller, adjust the amount of stitches in between your stitch markers. Take your yarn tail and mattress seam up to the stitch marker on both panels.

At this point it is a good idea to try on your top and make sure that it fits. If it is too small, add a few more rows to each panel.

Bodice

With the back of your top facing you, join yarn with a Sl St in the middle of your top (where you joined the 2 panels together).

Round 1: Ch 1, Sc 95(101, 115, 129, 143, 157, 167) evenly around the top. Do not join.   [95(101, 115, 129, 143, 157, 167) Sc]

***The remainder of this pattern will be worked in continuous rounds. Place a stitch marker in the first St and move it up with each round.***

Rounds 2-4: Sc in the first St, place a stitch marker to mark the first St. Sc in each St around.  [95(101, 115, 129, 143, 157, 167) Sc]

Round 5: Dc in the first St (where your stitch marker is). *Skip the next St. (Dc, Ch1, Dc) in the  next St*.  Repeat from * to * until the last 2 St. Skip the next St. Dc, Ch 1 in the last St.   [94(100, 114, 128, 142, 156, 166) Dc]
