The Inspiration Behind The Taylen Crochet Hoodie
Lately, I’ve really been feeling the need to push myself out of my comfort zone creatively, while also creating designs that are super wearable. I mean….. what good is a super stylish and trendy crochet top if it’s not very comfortable or functional to wear. Enter the Taylen Crochet Hoodie!!!!
From a zipper, to cuffed sleeves, to an enclosed drawstring on the hood…….This crochet hoodie is definitely ALL about the little details! But don’t let that intimidate you. The whole hoodie is worked up in 3 separate panels using only single crochet and chain stitches, so it’s still very beginner friendly.
The Yarn
For this crochet hoodie I used Yarn Bee Bambootiful yarn, a category 3 light weight Dk yarn. This was my first time using this yarn and I’m not disappointed. It’s a cotton/bamboo blend which creates a very soft and light texture perfect for making garments.

Finish off leaving a tail to seam shoulders
Construction
Lay your 2 front panels on top of the back panel. Make sure to line up the stitches on the front and back panel to assure you sew the shoulders evenly. Seam the front panels to the back panel leaving 38 stitches open in the center of the back panel and 16 stitches unworked on both front panels.
Once you have your shoulders seamed, count 55(56, 53, 54, 55, 53, 55, 55, 55) rows from the bottom on each side and place a stitch marker. This will be your armhole. Take a piece of yarn about 3 times as long as your side, and mattress seam from the bottom of your panels up to the stitch marker. Repeat for the second panel.
Customization Tip-
If you do not want your arm holes/ sleeves to be as wide, then you can seam up a few more stitches on each side until the arm hole is desired size. Keep in mind that changing the armhole size will also alter the stitch count on the sleeves.
Sleeves
Attach yarn in the armpit area and Ch 1. You will now be working around the arm hole opening in rounds.
***This portion of the sleeves is worked in TURNED rounds. Join at the end of each round with a Sl St and then TURN your work so that your next round will be worked in the opposite direction. ***
Round 1: Sc 72(72, 80, 80, 80, 86, 86, 86, 86) evenly around the arm hole opening. Join with a Sl St to the first Sc. Turn. [72(72, 80, 80, 80, 86, 86, 86, 86) Sc]
Round 2: Ch 1. (Sc, Ch 1, Sc) in the first St. *Skip the next St, (Sc, Ch 1, Sc) in the next.* Repeat from * to * around. Join with a Sl St to the first Sc. Turn. [72(72, 80, 80, 80, 86, 86, 86, 86) Sc]
Repeat round 2 until you have a total of 27 rounds in your sleeve.
***If you would like your sleeves to be longer or shorter, then simply add or omit rounds before continuing on with the next 4 Sc rounds.***
***You will no longer be working in turned rounds. Join at the end of each round with a Sl St and continue your next round in the same direction.***
Round 28: Ch 1. Sc in each Sc around. Join with a Sl St to the first Sc. DO NOT TURN. [72(72, 80, 80, 80, 86, 86, 86, 86) Sc]
Round 29: Ch 1. Sc in each St around. Join with a Sl St. [72(72, 80, 80, 80, 86, 86, 86, 86) Sc]

Row 52: Repeat row 47. [34 Sc]
Finish off leaving a long tail to seam hood.
Fold hood inside out and use the yarn tail to seam up the hood using your preferred seaming method.
Border
With your hoodie laying in front of you, join yarn in the bottom left hand corner.
Row 1: Ch 1. Sc in the edge of each row up the first front panel, around the hood, and back down the second front panel. Make sure to use the same amount of Sc on both sides of the hoodie. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1. Sc in each St around. Turn.
Repeat row 2 until you have 9 rows. At the end of row 9, do not finish off. Continue to Sc along the bottom edge of the hoodie and back to the first Sc. Join with a Sl St.
Finish Off.
Zipper (Optional)
Make sure to have a split zipper that is the same length or a few inches shorter than the hoodie.
Before sewing on the zipper we will be making a “case” for the zipper. This step is not necessary, but I think it gives the piece a more finished look.
Attach yarn in the inside of the hoodie at the top between rows 7 and 8 of the border. Ch 1. Work Hdc stitches in between rows 7 and 8 of the border by inserting the hook around the stitches. Continue until you reach the bottom of the border. Repeat for the other side.
Once you have the zipper case finished, place the zipper in the case and use sewing pins to hold the zipper in place. Then use needle and thread to sew the zipper into the case.
Pockets (Optional) (Make 2)
Row 1: Ch 30. Sc in the 2nd Ch from hook. *Skip the next Ch. (Sc, Ch 1, Sc) in the next.* Repeat from * to* across until 2 Ch remain. Skip the next Ch, Sc in the last Ch. Turn. [28 Sc]
Row 2: Ch 1. Sc in the first St. Skip next St. *(Sc, Ch 1, Sc) in the Ch Sp. Skip the next 2 St.* Repeat from * to * across until last St. Sc in the last St. Turn. [28 Sc]
Repeat row 2 until you have a total of 12 rows.
Row 13: Ch 1. Skip the first St. Sc in the first Ch Sp. *Skip the next 2 St, (Sc, Ch 1, Sc) in the next Ch Sp.* Repeat from * to* until the last St. Sc in the last St. Turn. [26 Sc]
Row 14: Ch 1. Sc in the first St. Skip next St. *(Sc, Ch 1, Sc) in the Ch Sp. Skip the next 2 St.* Repeat from * to * across until last St. Sc in the last St. Turn. [26 Sc]
Repeat row 13 and 14 until you have 25 rows. Your stitch count at the end of row 25 will be 14 Sc.
Finish off leaving a long tail to attach pockets to hoodie.
Attaching Pockets
Lay your hoodie in front of you. Position the pockets where you like them. I lined the pocket up with the bottom and side of the border. Using your yarn tail, seam around the pocket attaching them to the hoodie.
Tip: It is useful to place stitch markers in the 4 corners of your pocket attaching it to the sweater so that the pocket doesn’t move around as much while seaming.
Drawstring
Crochet a starting Ch approximately 60” long. Sl St in the 2nd Ch and each Ch across. If you would like your drawstring to be longer or shorter, then increase or decrease the amount chains created.
If you don’t like the look of the Ch drawstring you can also make a crochet i-cord.
Sewing tube for drawstring
Fold the trim of the hood under to the inside of the hood. Then, using a long yarn tail seam row 9 (the last row of trim) to row 6 of trim to create a tube for the drawstring. After you have seamed a few stitches, insert your drawstring into the tube and continue to seam over the drawstring, pulling it through as you seam.
Tie off, tuck in those ends and enjoy your new Taylen Hoodie!
