Inspiration + Design
Fall is in the air, and with cooler temps bound to be arriving soon, it’s time to start working on our fall makes! So for my first design of the fall season, I decided to make an oversized, slightly cropped simple crochet sweater.
The Austyn Pullover is the perfect beginner friendly transitional piece to add to your wardrobe. It is worked from the bottom up, creating 2 square panels, seamed together, and attaching sleeves. And even better, it only uses one stitch throughout, the double crochet stitch. It doesn’t get any easier than that.
The Yarn
For this simple crochet sweater, I used another one of the custom color-ways from the Cactus & Lace Hobo Chic #1 yarn collection. This specific color is a variegated yarn called “Austin”. It is dyed on a Dk weight Cotton/ Bamboo yarn base. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, this cotton/bamboo blend is by far my favorite fiber to work with. It is super soft and creates the most beautiful drape.

Pattern Notes
-This sweater is made in 2 panels and seamed along the sides.
-Sleeves are worked from the shoulder down to wrist in TURNED rounds.
-ALL the Dc stitches are worked in BETWEEN the Dc stitches from the previous row, not into the top loops as normal.
-Ch 2 does NOT count as a stitch throughout.
-Pattern is written for more of a “cropped” fit, add rows where indicated for a longer top.
-For customization tips, see the end of the pattern.
-Total Stitches are indicated between [ ].
-The sizing guide follows size XS(S, M, L, XL, 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X). E.g. “Fdc 55(63, 63, 74, 74, 85, 85, 96, 96)” means Fdc 55 for XS, Fdc 63 for Small, Fdc 63 for Medium, Fdc 74 for Large, Fdc 74 for XL, Fdc 85 for 2X, Fdc 85 for 3X, Fdc 96 for 4X, Fdc 96 for 5X. If there is only one number, it applies to all sizes.
Special Stitches
Dc in between the Dc from previous row – All of the Double crochet stitches in this pattern are done in between the stitches from the previous rows instead of into the top two loops as you usually would. Make sure to go under all 3 loops and to the left of the stitch post. The last St is in between the last post and the Ch 2 turning Ch.

Repeat row 2 until you have a total of 37(38, 38, 39, 39, 40, 40, 41, 41) rows.

For the back panel, repeat the instructions from the front panel ending when you have a total of 39(40, 40, 41, 41, 42, 42, 43, 43) rows.
***If you would like your top to be longer, continue to repeat row 2 until it reaches your desired length.***
Finish off leaving a long tail for seaming.
Construction
Lay the front panel on top of the back panel, making sure to line up your rows evenly. Using your yarn needle and the yarn tail, seam the shoulders together using the mattress stitch. You can make your neck line as big or as small as you would like. I seamed approximately 6” or 16 stitches inward on each side.
Once you have your shoulders seamed, cut a piece of yarn about 3 times as long as your side seam. Place a stitch marker on your top marking where you want your seam to stop and your armholes to start.
Sleeves
Join yarn to the under side of the arm pit area. Ch 2.
Round 1: Dc 36(38, 38, 44, 44, 50, 50, 55, 55) evenly around the arm hole opening. Join with a Sl St to the first Dc. [36(38, 38, 44, 44, 50, 50, 55, 55) Dc]

Repeat round 2 until your sleeves are your desired length. Then Ch 1, and Sc in each Dc around.
Finish Off
Customization Tips
-To adjust the width of the top, simply Fdc the number of stitches to obtain your desired width.
-To adjust the length of the top, continue to repeat row 2 of the pattern until you reach the desired length.
-To adjust the sleeve width, Dc more or less stitches around the armhole opening.
